Emoticons/font styles?

I tried an elephant, and it didnt work. Do you know if this is because of my pc or if it is because of some emoticons don't work? Also I tried to change my font to bold, and it showed up as a seperate word: [b] Well now my elephant is showing up in preview, but can you see it?
